‘I Have a Secret, Can You Keep It?’

22 Sep

illustration hand shh-ing with rings by Sarah and Sebastian and Karen Walker

We all have that local shop that if you dare step inside you know you’re going to drop more than you’d intended to on a Sunday afternoon.

It could be the deli and you’ve somehow bought enough Sicilian olives, provolone and cured meats to feed an entire family, or the natural therapies and cosmetics store, and you’ve walked out with three types of herbal teas and a bunch of calming bath salts because you’re going to need it when you’re credit card bill arrives.

For me, I’m known to do all of the above. But my biggest weakness is Pretty Dog, a fashion boutique in Newtown. It’s where I bought the pictured rings – years apart – but both were meant to be chilled out Sundays (not spend all your savings Sundays!).

‘Flippy Fun’

17 Jul

'Flippy Fun'

As previously promised or warned, I said that I’ll be talking about my holiday purchases for a while. And this post is another one of them.

This wonderfully rigid beauty is by Stockholm brand & Other Stories, which sits under the H&M Group.

Their products range from affordable leather goods, travel sized cosmetics to slightly offbeat fashion pieces – think quirky prints, wide silhouettes and super structured tailored threads.

While I stopped by* both the Barcelona and London stores this neoprene skirt is by far my favourite purchase. Better yet, this particular style when all the way down to size 32 (XXS) – who knew it even existed?

As someone who just always dresses like a person in mourning I naturally went for the black. However those more cheerful would probably find the pastel green and cobalt blue tones more appropriate.

‘A Simple Sunday’

'A Simple Sunday'

A low key weekend is nothing to be ashamed of. In fact they’re the ones that to truly enjoy.

I love being able to go at my own pace – no one really wants to have to stick to a schedule on their day off.

So sling your backpack over your shoulder(s) and take the time to smell the roses.

You’ll probably notice – as I have –  that you’ll feel much more refreshed than if you were to spend a day in the sun drinking Bloody Marys (though that, too, can be plenty of fun).

‘The Only Acne I want in my Life’

11 Jul

'The Only Acne I Want in my Life'

You’ll be reading about my holiday for a while – I’m sorry.

But when you plan a trip nine months in advance and then it flies by, that’s what will happen.

So while it’s all still fairly fresh, I thought I’d share with you some of my naughty purchases.

The first being my favourite jeans. I now own five pairs of Acne Studios Skin 5s, three of which I bought during my trip.

I’m usually a size 24 in these, but the different dyes used to produce each hue can affect the fit of the jeans.

The hue ‘Deep’ runs large and its impossible to find to size 23 in Sydney. But when I stumbled upon the Acne Studios store in St Germain, Paris, they had it neatly folded as if it had been waiting for my arrival.

I was so thrilled I walked out with three more purchases – impulse buys that the very suave sales assistant persuaded me into getting.

He saw me coming from a mile away.

‘Shopping Detox’

10 Jul

'Shopping Detox'

When I’m on holidays I shop twice as much as I usually would when I’m at home in Sydney.

Before I left for my trip my friends kept asking me what I was going to buy. I honestly had no idea.

But once I landed I was full of inspiration. Everywhere I went in London and in Paris, girls were wearing leather biker jackets. So I absolutely needed one (illustration to come).

Another must-have for me a nicely cut black blazer. And on my third-last day in London, I found it.

But what killed the bank account the most were the little purchases that added up over the five-week period. Lots of high street purchases, make-up buys and basics that will never go out of fashion.

So now that I’m home, I’m in need of a big detox. Load me up with green smoothies, please.
